Fire Instructor Reinstatement

Expired or surrendered certificates are reinstated in accordance with 4765-21-07 of the Administrative Code.

Revoked certificates are reinstated in accordance with 4765-21-08 of the Administrative Code.

Reinstatement requirements are determined by time elapsed since expiration. A $75.00 application fee (check/money order to “Ohio Treasurer of State”) is required with the reinstatement application.

To reinstate a certificate an applicant must have previously have held a certificate, at the level of certification sought, that was in good standing at the time the certificate expired.

No More Than 90 Days Since Certificate Expiration

  1. Provide proof of instructional continuing education (CE) hours completed during the certification cycle (cannot be completed after expiration date). Proof must have signature of applicant’s fire chief or program director of an Ohio chartered fire training program.
  2. Provide proof of teaching hours completed during the certification cycle (cannot be completed after expiration date). Proof must have signature of applicant’s fire chief or program director of an Ohio chartered fire training program.
  3. Submit a completed reinstatement application.

No More Than 6 Months Since Certificate Expiration

  1. Pass the instructional methods exam with a 70% or better. If the exam is not passed within three attempts, the instructor course of training must be repeated. Contact an Ohio chartered fire training institution to schedule the examination.
  2. Submit a completed reinstatement application.

More Than 6 Months But Not More Than 1 Year Since Certificate Expiration

  1. Pass the instructional methods exam with a 70% or better. If the exam is not passed within three attempts, the instructor course of training must be repeated. Contact an Ohio chartered fire training institution to schedule the examination.
  2. Complete 10 hours of supervised teaching under direct supervision of a certified Fire Instructor Trainer, under the auspices of an Ohio chartered fire training institution.
  3. Submit proof of completion of the supervised teaching along with a reinstatement application.

More Than 1 Year But Less Than 2 Years Since Certificate Expiration

  1. Pass the instructional methods exam with a 70% or better. If the exam is not passed within three attempts, the instructor course of training must be repeated. Contact an Ohio chartered fire training institution to schedule the examination.
  2. Complete 10 hours of supervised teaching under direct supervision of a certified Fire Instructor Trainer, under the auspices of an Ohio chartered fire training institution.
  3. Complete the 4-hour Fire Service Training module and the 4-hour Live Fire Training Awareness Course through an Ohio chartered fire training institution.
  4. Submit proof of completion of the supervised teaching, the Fire Service Training Module and the Live Fire Training Awareness Course along with a reinstatement application.

2 Years or More Since Certificate Expiration


NOTE: The Assistant Fire Instructor certification is NOT ELIGIBLE for reinstatement, regardless of time expired. Individuals wishing to reinstate an Assistant Fire Instructor certification must submit an initial application.
