2011

Bernice Marie Mahan -- March 5, 2011

-- Bernice Marie Mahan, 60, died on March 5, 2011. She was an educator for 30 years for the Graham Local School District. In 2003, she joined the EMS community where she was employed as a EMT-Paramedic, registered nurse and trustee at Riverside EMS in Rosewood Ohio. Mahan was a 2006 recipient of the EMS Star of Life Awards. She served her community from 2003 until the time of her death in 2011.

Harry C. Wilt -- May 8, 2011

-- Harry C. Wilt, 87, died on May 8, 2011. Mr. Wilt was instrumental in the creation of the Coshocton County Emergency Squad Association in 1975, moving EMS from funeral homes to a dedicated volunteer EMS organization, which led to what is now a paid service. He served as an active volunteer EMT, trustee and president of the organziation. He also served as chief for the Coshocton Squad.

2010

Ronald A. Thomas -- February 15, 2010

-- Ronald A. Thomas, 41, died on February 20, 2010. He was employed as a Firefighter/paramedic for the Madison Township Fire Department for 18 years, where he served as a member of the Honor Guard. Ronald also served as an instructor for the paramedic programs at the Grant Medical Center and Eastland Career Center.

 

2009

James Martin Hall -- May 30, 2009

-- James Martin Hall, 40, died on May 30, 2009. A fire captain since 2001, Hall had been a member of the Canton Fire Department for more than 20 years. Marty was a captain on the City of Canton firefighting force, where he had served the city for more than 15 years. He was honored as 2003 Firefighter of the Year for the role he and a fellow firefighter took in performing CPR on a child they rescued from a burning home. In January, the mayor of Canton honored Marty again with a meritorious citation for exceptional performance at another fire.

Lindsay Marie Polan -- December 23, 2009

-- Lindsay Marie Polan, 26, died on December 23, 2009. Lindsay served more than half her life to the Chester Township Fire Rescue Department and community beginning her EMS career on the Chester Township Explorer Post while in highschool. Once she turned 18, Lindsay began working part-time as a firefighter/EMT. She attended paramedic school and served as a medic in 2007.

 

2008

Robert E. Shetenhelm -- October 24, 2008

-- Robert E. Shetenhelm, 61, died Ocotber 24, 2008. he worked as a paramedic for the Sandusky County EMS.

Terry Lee Collins, Sr. -- October 13, 2008

-- Terry Lee Collins, Sr., 58, paramedicfor Pickaway Plains and Hocking County EMS died October 13, 2008. Collins also served as a volunteer fireman for Adelphi, Colerain and Harrison Townships.

Donald R. Harris -- September 24, 2008

-- Donald R. Harris Jr., 52 died on September 24, 2008. Harris was active in the Nelson Joint Fire Dept., the Portage County Fire Chiefs Association the Northeast Ohio Fire Chiefs Association and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. He was also a member of the Ohio National Guard 107th Armored Cavalry.

Richard L. Kear -- July 7,2008

-- Richard L. Kear, 58, Volunteer Firefighter of Pitt Township Fire Department died on July 7, 2008 while on duty.

Ora E. Ledsome Jr. -- July 4, 2008

-- Ora E. Ledsome Jr., 32 of Brewster, Ohio died July 4, 2008. he was a member of the Navarre Fire Department.

Gary L. Studer -- June 20, 2008

-- Gary L. Studer, 61, of a 30- year member of Whitehouse Fire Station died on June ,20, 2008.

Robin M. Broxterman -- April 4, 2008

-- Captain Robin M. Broxterman, 37 of Colerain Township, was killed while fighting a fire. She was a 17-year veteran of the Colerain Township where she was the first woman to make the rank of captain.

Brian M. Schira -- April 4, 2008

-- Brian W. Schira, 29, of Colerain Township was killed while fighting a fire. He served as a part-time firefighter for Colerain Township fire Department and with Delphi Township Fire Department.

Paul W. Swander -- February 2, 2008

-- Paul W. "Rosie" Swander, 74, of Ohio City died February 2, 2008. He served as chief for over 30 years at the Ohio City Volunteer Fire Department. Swander was a member of the Firefighters Association and a 50-year member of the Eureka Lodge No. 592 where he served as past master.

Christopher A. Wisner -- January 17, 2008

-- Christopher A. Wisner, 27, a part-time firefighter with Fairfield Township Fire Department, died January 17, 2008.

 

2007

Jarred W. Zimmerly -- September 9, 2007

-- Jared W. Zimmerly , 20, died on September 9, 2007 in a tragic crash while responding to a call. He was a firefighter with the Prairie Township Fire Department.

Jon Trainer -- July 24, 2007

-- Jon Trainer, 38, of of Mechanicsburg, died July 24, 2007. Trainer served as a firefighter at the Mechanicsburg Fire Department.

Sammy Ray Smith -- July 20, 2007

-- Sammy Ray Smith , 64, of Antwerp, died on July 20, 2007 while serving his community in a crash involving an ambualnce and a semi-truck.

Kelly J. Rager -- July 20, 2007

-- Kelly J. Rager, 25, of Antwerp, Ohio died on July 20, 2007 while serving her community in a crash involving an ambulance and a semi-truck. Kelly served as an EMS for the city of Antwerp.

Heidi L. Mcdougall -- July 20, 2007

-- Heidi L. Mcdougall, 31, of Antwerp, Ohio died July 20, 2007 while serving her community in a crash involving an ambulance and semi-truck. Heidi worked at paulding County Hospital and as a papramedic at M&M medivan in Defiance.

Amanda M. White -- July 14, 2007

-- Amanda M.White, 18, died on July 14, 2007 in a tragic car/train wreck. Ms. White completed her EMT-B courses in may 2007 and worked a the Rochester Volunteer Fire Department.

Steven Richard Smith -- June 30, 2007

-- Steven Richard Smith,45,of Cincinnati died June 30, 2007. Smith served as a Cincinnati firefighter/EMT, working at Engine Co. 49 in Madisonville.

Francis M. Sebring -- June 30, 2007

-- Francis M. Sebring, 81, died June 30, 2007. He was one of the first "Executive Directors" and a long time member of the Ohio Association of EMS, a past Program Coordinator of the Belmont Technical College EMS program and member of Dillonvale EMS.

 

2006

Jon ScottM. Graham -- December 10, 2006

-- Scott M. Graham, 20, of New Philadephia, died December 10, 2006. He was a graduate of the Ohio Fire Academy and the Parmaedic School in Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio.

Kenneth Anthony Urbanek -- October 29, 2006

-- Kenneth Anthony Urbanek, 24, firefighter at Rittman EMS and Fire.

Edward Jenik -- September 27, 2006

-- Edward Jenik, EMT-B, FFII Captain, Highland Heights Fire Department died on September 27, 2006. Captain Jenik was 53 years old and had served 30 years as a Firefighter and EMT-Basic.

Paul Montavon -- August 13, 2006

-- Lt. Paul Montavon Sr., veteran firefighter and paramedic at Whitewater Township in Hamilton County,died after responding to an automobile accident August 13, 2006.

Rose Woodbridge -- July 28, 2006

-- Rose Woodbridge, 56, died on July 28, 2006. While responding to a vehicle crash call and en route to the station, Ms. Woodbridge died from injuries received when the vehicle she was operating struck a utility pole. Ms. Woodbridge was a Volunteer firefighter and EMT-B for the Hanover Township Fire Department.

Betty C. Reese -- May 12, 2006

-- Chief Betty C. Reese, FF/Paramedic Assistant of Monroe Twp. Life Squad, Clermont county died May 12, 2006

David Garth Waymire -- April, 2006

-- David Garth Waymire, Vandalia Fire Division & Butler Township Fire Department 30+ years of volunteer EMT/FF for both communities in Montgomery County, died April 2006.

 

2005

Gregg A. Livingston -- December 26, 2005

-- Chief Gregg A. Livingston, of Greenville Area Emergency Response Services Inc, died December 26, 2005. He was a member of the Union City, Ohio & Rescue 1979-1993; member of Darke County Local Emergency Planning Commision, Darke County Homeland Security Committee, Darke County Mental Health Board of trustees, Darke County EMS member and past president, secretary of the Greater Miami Valley Ems Council and founder of the Darke County Fair Safety Committee.

Dustin Derga -- May 8, 2005

-- Marine Cpl. Dustin Derga, 24, of Columbus, died when he was caught in enemy small arms fire during combat near Ubaydi, Iraq. Derga was assigned to the Marine Reserve's 3rd Battalion, 25th Regiment, 4th Division in Columbus.

James H. Miller IV -- January 30, 2005

-- Army Pfc. James H. Miller IV, 22, of suburban Cincinnati, died in an explosion while he was guarding a polling place in Ramadi for Iraq's Jan. 30 elections.

 

2004

Harrison J. Meyer -- November 26, 2004

-- Army Pfc. Harrison J. Meyer, 20, of Worthington, died when his unit was hit with small arms fire in Ramadi. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team at Camp Howze, Korea.

Daniel J. Storer -- September 21, 2004

-- Dr. Daniel L. Storer, medical director of emergency medical services, died Sept. 21, 2004 at age 59. Storer co-founded the University Hospital Air Care program in 1984. He supervised all advanced cardiac life-support training for the American Heart Association Ohio Affiliate from 1992 to 1995.

Michael Barkey -- July 7, 2004

-- National Guard Sgt. Michael Barkey, 22, of Canal Fulton, was killed in a vehicle crash caused by hostile action. Barkey was a member of the 1484th Transportation Company based in Akron.

Kenneth Clark -- July 4, 2004

-- Kenneth Clark, 46, Captain with the Cincinnati Fire Department died, July 4, 2007. A third- generation firefghter, Clark was the first to volunteer and loved to teach young firefighters.

Charles Kiser -- June 24, 2004

-- Army Sgt. Charles Kiser, 37, who grew up in Amelia, was killed outside Mosul by a car bomb. Kiser was with the 330th Military Police Division, a reserve unit based in Sheboygan, Wis.

Michael J. Smith -- April 17, 2004

-- Marine Lance Cpl. Michael J. Smith Jr., 21, of Wintersville, died of injuries suffered from enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. The government did not release more details on how he died.

 

2003

Branden F. Oberleitner -- June 5, 2003

-- Army Pfc. Branden F. Oberleitner, 20, of Worthington, with the 101st Airborne Division. He was killed in Fallujah, Iraq, after his unit was fired upon by a rifle-propelled grenade.
