Testing in Lieu of CE

EMS Provider

You may choose to complete an examination in lieu of continuing education to renew your Ohio EMS certificate to practice.

The examination must be at your level of certification*, taken within the last six months of the certification cycle, and successfully completed within three attempts.

The examinations are developed and administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Questions for the examination are drawn from the same data base as examinations completed by candidates for initial certification. When registering for the examination at the NREMT website, you will register to take the assessment examination; not an examination for initial certification.

Once you have passed the examination you can apply for renewal of your certification. If you cannot do so before your expiration date, then you should file a Request for Extension of EMS Certificates (form EMS 0084) to apply for a 90-day extension. The request for an extension must be received by the Division of EMS prior to the expiration of your certificate to practice. A renewal application must be submitted to renew your certificate to practice and must be received in the Division of EMS prior to the expiration of your certification or the expiration of a granted extension.

*Note: You may test and renew at a lower level. If you test and renew at a lower level, you may reinstate within six years at the higher level if you choose.

EMS Instructor

You may choose to complete an instructional methods examination in lieu of the continuing education related to the “Fire and EMS Instructor Curriculum” objectives required to renew your Ohio EMS certificate to teach.

The examination must be taken within the last six months of the certification cycle and successfully completed within three attempts. The examination is developed and administered by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Medical Services and may be taken at any accredited EMS or chartered fire training institution.

Once you have passed the examination and completed all other requirements to renew your certificate to teach, you can apply for renewal of your certification. If you cannot do so before your expiration date, then you should file a Request for Extension of EMS Certificates (form EMS 0084) to apply for a 90-day extension.

NOTE: This option is not available for EMS Assistant or Continuing Education (CE) Instructors.
